Another Year & Another Journey

Another year and another journey up ahead, stored up ready to show itself. I look back, and I can see that being a 2^nd year has such a different method than the 1^st year – different struggles. Now, all the responsibilities are on us in Home B – doing the grocery list with the group, making sure we don’t stay up too late at night, getting up for class in time. I know I have more ways to prove to myself that I can do this and graduate.

 I remember when I had instantly wanted to become a 2^nd year - when I heard there was more freedom. But it was only half true. Yes, I had more privileges and such, but I wasn’t going to be totally free and be able to not do anything. As I started my 2^nd year, I knew it would be a little better and a bit more of an uphill challenge. 

Challenges came and gave me struggles – it was hard doing my chores and homework instead of playing around! - and I knew it wouldn’t be long until I was going to fail at certain areas like in relationships and trying to move on in specific areas. My parents almost pulled the plug, and I knew I had to do better or else it would’ve been a waste of time for them as well as me. 

My challenges aren’t easy nor are they a memory I’d love to keep. So I moved on, as best as I could. I thank God for all His wonders and His grace and patience with me. I throw all my problems towards God as if he’ll take them away, and I’m usually better the very next day. 

Every day, my classes roll on, and I’m starting to do well. Culinary Class so far has been my favorite. All the amazing dishes have my parents wanting me to cook for them which makes perfect sense, so it looks like I’ll be busy cooking even after my Christmas break. Our Chef, she’s amazing and has given me so many ideas. I long to one day work on a cruise ship, yet I have to work hard to achieve my dreams and goals. 

So, as I said, another year and another unexpected journey up ahead. I pray every day to stay strong to my true self and my life. I can now see myself one day graduating and saying, “I made it.”

My School Year in Review

This year has been crazy and long.

I can still remember the day when I first came to Shepherds. If I were to go through all of the moments that were great at Shepherds, it would take some time. Instead, I’ll go through my all-time favorites. But first, I want to say it was very hard when I came here. I took steps I shouldn’t have and that took me to almost getting expelled out of Shepherds. It took a bit to earn the trust of my advisor and other staff. I’m still learning here and earning trust every day. All of the rough times I had in 2013 sometimes have me thinking of how close I could’ve been to being asked to leave here. I wouldn’t have had the honor of learning and being taught by some amazing people. 

My all-time favorite moment was when we went to paintball. A friend of mine and I were on the same side, and we fired upon seeing one another. He thought I was the enemy, but I wasn’t … To make sure he would remember, I shot him up a bit (but just a bit). 

There are quite a few memories here I enjoyed, such as going to Action Territory and driving the go-carts and hanging with my friends. But honestly, 2013 was a bit tough and good.  I enjoyed playing basketball with the champions of the Soarin’ Eagles and Falcons which were great teams. My all-time favorite moment was at the Bucks stadium playing on the court at half-time and winning. I truly crossed that dream off my bucket list. 

As 2014 arrived, I didn’t see greatness coming, and I knew problems would come. We all can see problems in life, yet we can’t tell when the greatness will come. For me, it was being taught and instructed by an amazing editor who gives me great structure in writing. Her name is Susan Griffis, and she has been a great tutor in my life. She is my all-time favorite staff here.  

Another, Mr. Andrus who teaches Computer Skills, is my all-time favorite teacher, not for the love of technology or because he works with computers, but because of the way he teaches and how he gives you his undivided attention. Plus, his kids are amazing and such great company.

As graduation and summer break comes, I wonder how the graduates feel, and I wish I could be them. Yet, I have two years to go. I’ve always been about being fast, but I know it’ll take some time, and I have to enjoy it and learn as I go. But for the graduates, I pray they will prosper and learn from Shepherds College, and that they will never forget that God gave them a chance in life to go forth and to change the world. I thank God I have met them. 

As the days go down, and we are all counting down, I know one thing. We all will miss each other. We all can say, “I miss you,” but when we’re at our separate houses and something weird happens, we’ll be, “I wish my friends were here.”  So don’t be saying, “No, I won’t miss you.” It’s all a lie. I’ll miss you. But I won’t miss being out of Wisconsin for two months, that’s for sure. In all, as I end here and look forward to seeing my family and all my friends whom I haven’t seen for some time, all I can say to the staff and teachers here is, “Thank you, sincerely, for a year of greatness.”

And to the ones who’ll be heading out of here for good, “May you truly make the right choices in life and may you prosper.  We will miss you and will pray for you.

State Champions

Thank you to first-year student, Micah Muma, for writing today's blog.

The whole basketball season was an amazing ride!  We had our problems, but we had fun the whole time. We went to the State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament and won. 

It seems simple as I write it, but when you think about it and look at how we ended up with a win in spite of all our injuries, I thank God for the whole team, for our amazing coach, Mr. Terrill, and to all of the other coaches for bringing us through it.  Congrats to you all! 

I remember the first game we played. We were a bit nervous and, when we won 2-0, that very day I said we’d be heading towards State as if it already was the conference game. But we had to keep our heads up.

We may have won all our games, but we didn’t do it without our God who gave us the chance, the teamwork, as well our coach. 

Next year is already in most of the basketball players’ heads.  It’s amazing how we won, and now we know exactly how to head toward State once more. I just want to thank our Coach, Mr. Terrill, so much for all the time he gave us and for giving us great advice as well. We can’t wait for next year.

For the players - let’s try to stay healthy as much as we can. 11-0 is a spectacular saying, and it feels great to ponder. All the time we played, we always came out saying, “Whether we win or lose, we are going to praise God. We are playing for God and Shepherds College.”  

We remember all the great plays, all of the yells Mr. Terrill had shouted at us, Coach Cronin for helping us and taking the place of Coach Terrill when he was away, and Alyssa Terrill for helping the team and writing down our faults for us to work on.

The day we went up to state, I honestly was a bit nervous, but when you have a great coach, great basketball team and a God who had been watching over us the whole season, you can achieve a lot.

At the dorms in Oshkosh, it was loud, fun and really smelly at times. And it was funny when we all watched the Kentucky versus Wisconsin in the men’s final four game (I was the only one who was for Kentucky). In all, it was such a blast to be at State for the very first time with Shepherds and be 11-0 all the way through State. Now that basketball is over for a spell and we can rest, we can look back and say, “We did it.”  I say when you “Think Big, Dream Big and Believe Big, you will have BIG results in life no matter the situation.”

Once more, thank you Shepherds for letting us play basketball this year. And to Mr. Terrill, thanks for coaching.

I’m looking forward to another spectacular year with the Soarin’ Eagles.

The Host

Nick, a host on Preview Day

Last week was great as I got ready to be a host for the visitors on Preview Day. If a potential student wanted to be here to see what Shepherds College is like, Abby, Nick and I were their host.

At lunch on Preview Day, we all sat down and talked while we ate the great and amazing food Chef McCarthy made with his students. The sandwiches were filled with chicken salad mixed with grapes and crunchy celery. They tasted spectacular.

All I want to say to the students who want to head to Shepherds College is, “Be strong. Don’t let the world mess with you or give you a battle you can’t fight.

“In all, when you come here, I hope you enjoy it. You’ll learn a lot. If you don’t know much about God, be prepared to be taught about Him and the Bible. There are a lot of great things here. Faculty and staff will show you countless things and give you helpful advice for life. We are all hosts here, I guess!

“A Shepherds College education is life changing, and you can learn a whole lot. The Bible itself gives you a verse on it. In Proverbs 1:5 it says, ‘Wise people can also listen and learn; even smart people can find good advice in these words.’”

So anyone can learn, and we can all act smart and, as a result, we will all learn something new by the end of the day.

And our biggest HOST is God so don’t ever be shy or scared to ask God for anything. 

To all who may read this, may you have a blessed day, and to all the ones who want to visit here, don’t be shy or be afraid for God will help you.
