We have a lot of very gifted artists on campus this year.
While we currently don’t offer an art class, we try to find
opportunities to honor the gifts, strengths and abilities of each student. In
order to give our artists a creative outlet, the college decided to hold a
contest for the students to design the 2012 Shepherds College Christmas card.
This year’s theme was Christmas Joy.
Mrs. Harvey created a box for the entries and asked the
students to submit their designs by the end of October.
Card designs poured in from the students – twenty of them!
We saw Santas,
nativity scenes,
Christmas scenes,
and creative lettering.
How do we pick a winner from so many fantastic ideas?
We couldn’t do it. Tracy Terrill couldn’t decide on just one
design. So, he declared each artist a winner and threw a pizza party in their
honor!
Last Friday, the students shared pizza, chips, soda &
ice cream “drumsticks” with Mr. Terrill, Miss Houk and Mrs. Harvey.
Mrs. Harvey shared this about the special event, “It was
really fun to sit with the students – mostly first-years with a few second- and
third-years sprinkled in. How warm and affirming to share a meal, laughter and
friendly teasing. We collectively agreed that whatever was said, we would
reply, ‘DAVID DID IT!’ which brought lots of laughter around the table. Mr.
Terrill asked, ‘Who said they would clean up the tables?’ and we all shouted, ‘DAVID
DID IT!’ It was so fun and almost hard to digest my lunch with all the energy
in the room. The students were pleased with their artistic accomplishments and
excited about the upcoming Christmas break.”
All the students’ designs are posted on a large bulletin
board with wishes for JOY to everyone passing by.
Shepherds College is looking for a volunteer art teacher who can work with interested students during the second semester. To learn more about this service opportunity, please contact Becci at 262-878-5620 ext. 2304.
