Friday Fun: Time To Shine

I received an invitation earlier in the week from Tracy Terrill inviting me to a Time to Shine meeting this morning.

I had no idea what it was. I thought maybe it was an inspirational, let’s push harder, rah-rah type of meeting with the staff that would pump me full of adrenaline, drive me to double my productivity and cause profoundly poetic, highly intellectual and thought-provoking words to rise from my innermost being in order to bless you all with soul-stirring blogging at its best.

Nope.

Good thing I asked ahead of time what the meeting was actually about so I was prepared with my camera.

Time to Shine is a series of skits performed by the teachers for the benefit of the students. These skits will be put on every Friday morning and will teach the students a concept best understood through zany behavior, strange costumes and lots of laughing and yelling. It’s creative teaching at its finest.

Today’s lesson was on the proper way to accept, or not accept, an award. I’ll tell you the story through photos - really the only way to do this event any justice.

The students all showed up in the Bolthouse Center at 8:30. They had no idea what they were in for.
They were asked to take a seat on the floor in front of the stage.
Miss Luchterhand welcomed the students to the Awards show and announced the nominees.
Mrs. Cyr made quite a production of her presence at the Awards.
And the first award goes to...

MRS. LUCHTERHAND!!!!       Hmmmm... No one looks too happy for her.
The next award went to Miss Pollard. Mrs. Cyr and Mrs. Kolkman aren't celebrating.
They both want the next award, which went to...
MRS. KOLKMAN!!!
Is there some gloating going on here?!     But wait!! I think there's one more award...
...and it goes to MRS. KONOPASEK!!!  Poor Mrs. Cyr.
Is this the face of a poor sport? Why isn't she happy for her friends?
Miss Luchterhand asked the students what they felt was wrong with the nominees behavior.
"They weren't happy for their friends. They weren't grateful. They misbehaved on stage."
"They showed poor sportsmanship. They were rude. They only thought of themselves."
Huummphhhh!! We're not sure how we feel about those answers!
Miss Luchterhand said, "Let's try this again the correct way!" and called the nominees back to the stage.
Mrs. Cyr finally won her award and accepted it graciously. Her friends were happy for her success.
Each nominee showed an attitude of humility and grace as they accepted their awards and set a wonderful example for the students to follow.
And follow they did! There was a timely reason behind the skit. The teachers were presenting the students with the Ai Awards. Israel won for Positive Choices in the last two weeks.
Carolyn won for Improved Classroom Performance.
And Dallas won for Leadership & Success in the Clark Apartments. Congratulations students!
The students loved the lesson. "That was fun! That was hilarious! I really learned something!"said Daniela. Wade added, "That was really entertaining." David laughed, "Miss L is so funny. She cracks me up!"
Every student agreed that this was an experience worth repeating. They're all looking forward to next Friday's entertaining and memorable lesson.
