Day 27 of the 31 for 21 Challenge

If you’re visiting this blog, there’s a very good chance you are:

·         Someone with intellectual disabilities
·         A parent or family member of someone with intellectual disabilities
·         A friend of someone with intellectual disabilities
·         A special education teacher, or
·         A professional in the disability field

No matter where you fit on this list, you probably want to learn all you can about things like the correct terminology to use when talking about disabilities, advanced educational options available to students with disabilities, assistive technology, government assistance, medical advances, success stories about people with disabilities, even fashion that’s been adapted to meet the needs of people with various disabilities.

Over the years, I’ve discovered some really helpful resources I’d like to share with you:

Logan Magazine – A magazine for young people with disabilities. Because life is always beautiful.

Apostrophe Magazine - A quarterly magazine for people with developmental disabilities who are overcoming ‘can’t,’ ‘shouldn’t,’ and ‘don’t’ in their lives.

Lift Disability Magazine - A composite of inspirational articles and tidbits of information written by real people for real people impacted by disability.

SEEN Magazine - Educator resources, articles and reviews for teachers and teaching assistants. News and articles that cover most every area of teaching, including special education.

Exceptional Parent Magazine – A magazine for parents of children or young adults with disabilities. Includes reports, forum, products links, and books.

Parenting Special Needs Magazine - A magazine to help parents navigate the uncharted waters of raising a special needs child.

Special Parent Magazine – A guide for parents of children with special needs, offering inspirational stories, the latest research, local resources and parent-to-parent advice.

Ability Magazine – A bimonthly featuring celebrity interviews with an emphasis on health and disability.

Disability Scoop – The premier source of developmental disability news.

Disaboom – Information and resources for people with disabilities.

The Coffee Klatch – An interactive forum on Blog Talk Radio and Twitter bringing you expert guests to discuss raising a child with special needs.

This is just a sampling of what's out there! As society becomes more aware of people with intellectual disabilities, as people with disabilities become more active in their communities, the information in these types of resources becomes invaluable. With education comes knowledge, understanding and acceptance and, ultimately, a better quality of life for those we care about.
