Friday's Top Five: Lunch!

My daughter picked her college based on the degrees and scholarships offered.

I’m pretty sure both of my boys selected their colleges based on the food served at Open House.

I get that.  Food is a very important part - maybe even the highlight - of the day for many of us.

I think about my school days when the cafeteria ladies served some type of tuna surprise at least once a week. Dark chunks of very strong tasting tuna served in a sauce made with canned cream soup. They added either pasta or rice and mixed it all in with frozen vegetables, usually peas, but they changed it up once in a while, hence tuna “surprise.” This particular lunch scared most of the students, and the day it was served was a very long day indeed. No fun lunch break.

I was curious what the students thought about the school lunches at Shepherds College. Do they look forward to them? Do they enjoy them?  I asked and got a resounding “Yes!”

Everyone gave me their favorites – crab casserole, chicken alfredo, chimichangas, meatloaf, hamburgers, beef stroganoff, deli sandwiches, chili dogs, corn dogs, brats, macaroni & cheese.

Even the mashed potatoes got a vote.

But there were five lunch entrees that stood out above the rest, and here they are with student commentary added:

1.      Lasagna
“It’s very cheesy and has a good crunchy edge.”

 2.      Pizza
“Did you have to ask? Isn’t everybody just going to say pizza?”

 3.      Egg rolls
“I could eat a hundred of ‘em.”

             4.      Ribs
“No bones! Good on a bun or alone.”

             5.      And tied for 5th place – Italian Sausage
“It’s the best, but any of the sausage-y stuff is my favorite”

             and…

             The Salad Bar
“It’s fresh and so good, especially with cheese and ranch dressing.”

So if you’re considering Shepherds College for a student or for your son or daughter, rest assured that they will be well fed. They will have meal options that they enjoy. And they will look forward to the break in their days of learning how to be successful during their lifetime of Appropriate Independence.
