Friday’s Top Five: The Whats, Wheres & Whens of Preview Day

Day 12 of the 31 for 21 Challenge

It’s Preview Day! My favorite day of the college year when I get to sit at the front desk and greet the new visitors to Shepherds College.

I’ve already written about the events of this day in the blog, A Sneak Peak, so today I’m going to tell you the top five things people ask me about after they walk in our door for the first time. It’s a time when our visitors are the most nervous since they haven’t had a chance to mingle with other guests and get comfortable.  It’s the time when the questions at the forefront of their minds – questions of utmost concern – pop out.

I hope, if you’re considering Shepherds College for yourself or your child, that knowing the answers to these questions ahead of time helps you relax and enjoy your Preview Day that much more!

1.       Where’s the bathroom?

I almost didn’t include this question because it seemed a little obvious and gauche, but then I realized that there’s a reason this question is asked so often that may be important to hear. People drive long distances to attend a Preview Day! Not all our visitors are from the southeastern Wisconsin area. They drive in from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Minnesota. They fly into Mitchell Airport from New Jersey and Colorado and Texas and then make the half-hour drive to campus. Please don’t let distance rule out Shepherds College as a post-secondary option.  We can suggest clean hotels, good restaurants and fun things to do while you’re in town for Preview Day.

And I almost forgot to answer the question! The bathroom is located right across the hall from the room you’ll be meeting in.

2.       Can I keep the pen?

I give you a pen to fill out an information card at the desk. It’s yours to keep. We also give you a t-shirt and possibly wrist bands, bookmarks and a canvas bag. It’s all yours.

3.       What’s a Kringle?

Now that you’re in Racine County for a visit, you’re going to hear about Kringle. After you’re done at the front desk, I’ll invite you to step into the Welcome Center for a continental breakfast, including Kringle.

Kringle is a Racine specialty brought over from our Danish ancestors. It’s made with melt-in-your-mouth layers of flaky pastry, butter and moist filling, like raspberries, almonds, chocolate, cream cheese, caramel…

After you’ve tried it at the Preview Day, you’re going to want to pick one or two up to take home with you. Ask any of us at Shepherds about our favorite bakery and we’ll direct you to the nearest location.

4.       When are we going to get started?

We ask you to arrive for a Shepherds College Preview Day anywhere between 8:00-9:00am to register, mingle, eat and watch a fun video of our students. Chris Wright, our Director of Admissions, starts the program promptly at 9:00.

5.       Can I look around?

You’ll register and meet in the Findley Center. It’s a beautiful building, and we definitely encourage you to walk around the main areas. There’s food and a video in the Welcome Center, a comfortable seating area in front of the fireplace, a history wall showing the important events in Shepherds past and a donor tree naming all the wonderful people who have helped support the ministry with their planned gifts.

Now that you’re fully prepared, if you’d like to register for an upcoming Preview Day, please call Chris Wright at 262-878-6351. Pens and Kringle will be waiting for you!
